Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the emancipation of enslaved people. It's a celebration of freedom and the end of slavery in the United States, though it was not formally recognized as a federal holiday until 2021. The holiday is a portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth".
